Francisco Viana

Francisco Viana was born in Lisbon in 1993.

He began his contrabass studies in Lisbon at the age of 14 with teacher Pedro Wallenstein, after having studied piano since he was 5.

He was admitted in 2013 to the Centro Superior Katarina Gurska (CSKG) in Madrid to attend the Degree in Music in the specialty of Interpretation with Professor Karen Martirossian.

After finishing his degree in 2017, he was admitted in 2018 to the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML) to attend the Master in Music with Professor Manuel Rego.

Throughout his school career he had the opportunity to work with great masters of the contrabass in addition to full professors, in masterclass regime or private lessons, such as Luís Cabrera, Janne Saksala, Yuri Aksenov, Rinat Ibragimov, Vitan Ivanov, and Vladimir Kouznetsov.
He was also influenced in different ways in his musical career by teachers and musicians from other musical instruments and areas with whom he had the privilege of being able to collaborate and learn, such as Lev Vinocour, Cecília Berkovich, Vicente Alberola, George Pehlivanian, among others.

Between 2017 and 2019 he was a fellow of the GDA and EDP foundations through the OSJ-Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil. During this period he was integrated into the orchestra as head of the contrabass section, developing an intense activity of concerts throughout the country.

He also had the opportunity to perform solo with the orchestra in 2018, at Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, with the Concerto no2 in E Major for Contrabass and Orchestra by Karl D. Dittersdorf.

His professional activity nowadays is mostly composed of regular collaborations in orchestral formations, namely with the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra, of which he has been a member since 2019, and with the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, with which he frequently collaborates on a regular basis as reinforcement since 2018.

Apart from his orchestral activity, he also frequently collaborates with various chamber music groups on different stages in Spain and Portugal, with which he develops a varied musical activity that ranges from ancient music to the present day.

He has been a Music Training teacher since 2012, and contrabass teacher since 2015, and has taught since then continuously in free and official education in various institutions in Portugal, from the initiation level to the successful preparation of professional education students for admission to Higher Education.
