Of U.S. origin, Catherine Stockwell studied at Interlochen Arts Academy, Northwestern University, and Yale University, where she completed her Masters in bassoon performance in 1992. She continued post-graduate studies at the Conservatoire de Lausanne in Switzerland where she received a “Prémier Prix” in the Virtuosité class in 1996. During her years of studies, Catherine Stockwell had the opportunity to work with Robert Barris, Willard Elliot, Stephen Maxym, Roger Birnstingl, and Kim Walker.
A resident of Portugal since 1996, she works regularly with the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon, the Cascais Symphony, the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra, the Sinfonietta of Lisbon, and the Gulbenkian Orchestra as well as multiple ensembles for chamber music and early music.
Catherine Stockwell worked as professor of bassoon and of chamber music at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra between 1999 and 2012. In 2016, she completed her doctorate in Music and Musicology at the University of Évora, awarded highest distinction.
