André Castro

At the age of 16 he joined the Conservatório Nacional in the class of Professor João Paulo Monteiro.

In 2013/2014 through auditions, he joined “” (Youth Orchestra of all the Conservatories of Music in Portugal).

In 2014 he joined Professor Marco Fernandes class at the

Metropolitana Conservatory and after completing this course, continued the studies also in Lisbon with: Richard Buckley, Pedro Silva, Rui Sul Gomes and Fernando Llopis Mata at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra.

Also in 2014 he joined Portuguese Youth Orchestra and National Youth Orchestra.

In 2016 he played as a solo guest with the National Conservatory Percussion Group at the

International Percussion Festival “Tomarimbando”.

Through auditions, he joined the Youth Orchestra in Germany: Deutsch-FranzösischesForum

Junger Kunst in 2017, where I had the opportunity to play the 8th

Bruckner’s Symphony in places like the

Berliner Dom and Stadtkirche Bayruth.

He worked with Professor Wolfgang Gaag and took a tour of Berlin, Strasbourg, Wiesbaden, Lübeck and Bayruth with conductor Nicolaus Richter.

In 2017 he won the audition for the Academy of Gulbenkian Orchestra, where he took a tour of Portugal (Lisbon, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra) playing in the most important places, directed by conductor Joana Carneiro.

Still connected to Gulbenkian Orchestra Academy, in 2018 he was selected to play with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in one concert during their tour to Portugal through the Side by Side project.

In 2020 he was selected through auditions for the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée (OJM) and have worked with Professor David Jackson from the London Symphony Orchestra.

Currently, he ́s having lessons with the former Concerctgebouw Timpanist, Marinus Komst and study in Conservatorio di Musica Lorenzo Perosi with Antonio Catone, Nando Russo and Carmelo Gullotto.

He participated in Masterclasses or had private lessons with Percussionists and Timpanists such as: Pedro Carneiro, Bence Major, Jeffrey Davis, Peter Vulperhorst, Vassilena Serafimova,Nick Woud, Andrew Wiering, Michael Lauren, Raymond Curfs, Bart Quartier, Nancy Zeltsman,

Hans Zonderop, Anders Åstrand, Mark Duggan, JB Lèclere, Mark Braafhard, Peter Sadlo, Bogdan Bacanu, Ji Hye Jung among others.

He collaborated with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Cascais Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Academic Orchestra, Madeira Classical Orchestra, ESML Symphony Orchestra, Beiras Philarmonic, Lisbon Film Orchestra among others.

He also worked with the Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa and the Metropolitana BrassEnsemble.

He participated in some Youth Orchestras such as: Youth Symphony Orchestra of Portugal,, National Youth Orchestra among others.

He worked with the conductors: Michael Zilm, Gustavo Gimeno, Emilio Pomarico, Pedro Neves, Jean-Marc Burfin, Thomas Hampson, Lorenzo Viotti, Ludwig Wicky, Ernest Martinez Izquierdo, Paul McCreesh, Krzsysztof Urbanski, José Eduardo Gomes, Diogo Costa , Benjamin Shwartz, Robert Ziegler, Jorge Matta, Anthony Gabriele, Giancarlo Guerrero, Nuno Coelho, Ludwig Wicki, Hannu Lintu, Susanna Mälkki, Christopher Bochmann, Lawrence Foster, Jean Sebastien Bereau, Rafael Agullo Albors, Nikolay Lalov, Sebastian Perlowski, Claudio Scimone, among others and with soloists / artists like Jan Lisiecki, Jane Birkin, Igudesman & Joo, David Lefèvre, Sergei Kachatryan among others.
